Innovations in Decking.

Maine Deck is an innovative and cost-effective alternative to traditional timber decking offering the landscaping and open space industry a number of unrivalled benefits; it is low maintenance, it does not rot, warp or splinter and it has good slip resistance.

Manufactured from over 95 per cent British post-production and post-consumer waste, Maine Deck is available in a choice of six standard colours and in the UK has already found successful application in slipways, balconies and bridges as well as decking and swimming pool and spa surrounds.

For example, Dorset landscaper Inspirational Designs has converted 90 per cent of its deck installations to Maine Deck. Whenever we present the product, comments Construction Manager Scott Clark, the client immediately recognises its merits as an alternative to traditional timber. Our conversion rate of installations has definitely increased since we introduced Maine Deck. Not only does it look fantastic and perform well, but it also fits in with our environmental policy that appeals to all clients.

Kendal Heron adds Although in its infancy in the UK, wood fibre and plastic composite (WPC) is the most rapidly growing market in the US plastics industry. It is valued at over 700 million US dollars and is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of 14 per cent throughout the remainder of the decade.

There is no reason why WPC shouldnt enjoy equally commendable growth in the UK

Since Maine Deck burst onto the British market earlier this year sales have gone from strength to strength. This British manufactured range of composite decking has already been successfully used for decking, boardwalks, footbridges and benches.

So what is it about Maine Deck that makes it so unique? Kendal Heron, Sales and Marketing Director explains. “WPC’s (short for wood polymer composites), already a fast growing market in the United States, are set to make a huge impact here in the UK. Maine Deck is not only environmentally friendly, as over 95% of the product is made from recovered material, but is designed for use in public places where safety is paramount as this new decking has a very high slip resistance wet or dry. In addition it does not rot, warp or splinter and requires very little maintenance and is available in a standard range of 6 colours as well as many bespoke colours”.

“Our clients include National Trust (the latest project being a boardwalk replacement at a place of international scientific interest in North Yorkshire), Devon Wildlife Trust and Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth amongst others. We are also receiving a lot of interest from Architects who would like to consider Maine Deck in the initial design and planning stages for new schools and council property development.
